Local, Free-range Eggs

Free-range eggs are better for you. Free-ranging hens forage for foods that are natural for them to eat — primarily seeds, bugs and grasses. Conversely, indoor hens are typically fed a vegetarian diet that is not natural for them to eat. Hens eating their natural diet produce more nutritious eggs packed with vitamins, antioxidants, protein and omega-3 fatty acids. Free-ranging hens get sunshine and exercise, too, both of which help them produce eggs higher in calcium, lutein, vitamin A, vitamin E and vitamin D than their indoor counterparts. Free-range eggs have less saturated fat and cholesterol than commercial eggs, too. They are also richer in color, yolk density, shell thickness and freshness.

Local eggs are fresher. It can take weeks to transport eggs from a commercial facility and unload them at the store before you buy them. Buying eggs from a local source means you are getting fresher eggs that have traveled a fraction of the distance of commercial eggs.
